Common questions about Dance Command and Dance Seekers, with the answers our team gives on the phone.
Dance Command is software for running dance and live events.
We are based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We are online only and there is no public counter to visit.
Office hours are weekdays, 9am to 5pm Eastern. Events run in the evenings and at weekends, and people working those nights can reach us then too.
Our website is dancecommand.com.
Dance Command. The back office for people who run dance events. Tickets, the door, check-in, cash and card at the till, instructors and DJs, waivers, invoices, payouts and taxes. Nights published here appear on Dance Seekers automatically. Free to start and there is no monthly fee.
Dance Seekers. The free public network where dancers find nights, follow communities and keep their tickets. Dancers use it. Organizers do not run their business from it. There is nothing to buy.
There is no monthly fee, no setup fee and no contract. You are charged when you sell something and not otherwise. Cash and comped entries are always free.
Dance Command charges a transaction fee of 7.5% + $1 on a ticket, sold online or at the door.
| Ticket price | Our fee | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| $5.00 | $0.50 | $4.50 |
| $10.00 | $1.75 | $8.25 |
| $15.00 | $2.12 | $12.88 |
| $20.00 | $2.50 | $17.50 |
| $35.00 | $3.62 | $31.38 |
| $100.00 | $8.50 | $91.50 |
That transaction fee is everything. Nothing else is added on top. Those amounts are what you keep when you absorb the fee; most organizers pass it on, and then the buyer pays it and you keep the whole price.
Instructors, DJs and photographers selling their own lessons and bookings pay the same transaction fee as a ticket, 7.5% + $1, online or in person. Paying them for a night has a lower transaction fee: 0.8% transaction fee (max $5) from your bank.
Anything under $10.00, a tip or a drink, pays 10 percent with no fixed part, never under $0.50. A five dollar tip pays fifty cents. No single sale is ever charged more than $400.00, and we never keep more than $10.00 of it: on a big ticket the fee is what the card costs to run plus $10.00.
Invoices are for billing a venue, a sponsor or a corporate client. An invoice of $500.00 costs $24.80 paid by card, or $5.00 paid by bank transfer. Bank transfer is 1 percent, at least $2.00 and never more than $50.00, so it is much cheaper for anything large.
You choose who pays the fee. Per organization you can add it on top so the buyer pays, absorb it so your advertised price is what they are charged, or split it. Whichever you choose shows the same way on the checkout, the receipt and the invoice.
Money goes to your own Stripe account rather than to ours. You are the merchant, you own the refunds, and payouts land in your bank on Stripe's schedule. The prices on this page are in US dollars. Tickets sell in your Stripe account's currency, with payouts in your country's currency where Stripe is available.
The scanner will not read someone's ticket.
Search their name or phone number in the door search and check them in by hand. That counts exactly the same as a scan.
The scanner or the app has stopped working altogether.
The door keeps working without a connection and catches up when it comes back, so carry on checking people in. If nothing responds at all, take names on paper and we will reconcile afterwards.
Someone paid cash and is not on the list.
Add them at the door and take the cash. Cash sales are never charged a fee.
Do people have to sign the waiver before they come in?
No. The waiver is a record and never a gate. The door shows who has signed, and the organizer decides what to do about anyone who has not.
Someone under eighteen needs to sign the waiver.
They tick that they are under eighteen and give a parent or guardian's name and phone number. The adult is the one agreeing.
The card reader will not take a payment.
Take cash and add the sale at the door so the count stays right. If the reader is dead for the rest of the night, tell us and we will get someone on to it.
Someone says they bought a ticket but it is not showing.
Search by the phone number or email they bought with rather than by name, because tickets follow the number. If it still is not there, let them in and tell us the name and the number.
What does it cost?
Nothing monthly. You are charged only when you sell. On a $5.00 ticket the fee is
$0.50, online or at the door, and that transaction fee is everything. You can pass it on to the buyer.
When do I get paid?
Ticket money goes to your own Stripe account rather than to us, so payouts land on Stripe's own schedule. You are the merchant.
Can I make the buyer pay the fee?
Yes. Per organization you can add the fee on top, absorb it, or split it, and whichever you choose shows the same way on the checkout, the receipt and the invoice.
Why is my event not showing on Dance Seekers?
It publishes once the night is public and your organization is connected to Dance Seekers. If it is still missing, that connection is usually the reason. Give us the details and someone will check it.
Can I pay my instructors and DJs through it?
Yes. They connect their own account and you can pay them straight through. It has a lower transaction fee than a sale: from your Dance Command balance it is zero.
How do I refund someone?
From the money page for that night. The money is in your own Stripe account, so the refund is yours to make.
Can I bill a venue or a sponsor?
Yes, with an invoice. An invoice of $500.00 costs $24.80 paid by card or $5.00 paid by bank transfer, so bank is much cheaper for anything large.
I want a refund.
Refunds are the organizer's decision, because the money went to them rather than to us. Tell us the night and the phone number you bought with and we will pass it straight to them.
Is the event tonight still on?
We cannot confirm a particular night from here. The organizer's page on Dance Seekers has the latest, and we will pass your question on.
I cannot find my ticket.
It is in Dance Seekers under the phone number you bought with. If it is not there, give us that number and the night and we will have it sent again.
How much is it to get in?
That is the organizer's own price and it is on their page on Dance Seekers. We would rather not quote a number that turns out to be wrong.
How do I get started?
Sign up free at dancecommand.com. There is nothing to pay until you sell something.
Do I need a contract?
No contract, no setup fee and no monthly fee.
Can I use it outside the United States?
Yes, for tickets. They sell in your Stripe account's currency, with payouts in your country's currency where Stripe is available. Invoices and in-person card payments work in the United States only for now.
Do you take a cut of cash?
No. Cash and comped entries are always free.
We take the whole story before letting you go, so nobody has to ring you back to ask the basics.
If you are working a night: which venue and which night, what you were doing when it stopped, what the screen says word for word, whether anyone is waiting in front of you, and whether you can still take money.
If you are an organizer: your organization's name, which product, the exact night or the exact amount if it is about money, what you have already tried, and whether it is blocking tonight.
If you are a dancer: which night, which organizer, and the phone number the ticket was bought with.
If you are new to us: what you run, how often, how you sell tickets today, and the town you are in.
We will not promise a refund, a payout or a price we cannot see. We will not say whether a named person is on a list, or read out anyone's personal details. We will not confirm that a particular night is going ahead. In each case we take the details and someone comes back to you.
